1 Timothy 4:8 godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.

What is godliness?

Pious, devout, having religion, living the faith. Knowing God is in control, and trusting in Godís providence. Seeing God at work in daily life, and rejoicing in his grace and love.

1Tim 6:5 and wrangling among men who are depraved in mind and bereft of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain.

James 1:27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.

So, godliness is the fruit of faith, begun at baptism, which grows as it is fed by the grace of God through His Word. It is living the new life to which we have been called in Jesus Christ. It is repenting of sin, and trusting in the forgiveness that is ours in Jesus Christ, and it is sharing the good news of this free salvation.

Why godliness?

Rom 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and wickedness of men who by their wickedness suppress the truth.

Rom 11:26 and so all Israel will be saved; as it is written, "The Deliverer will come from Zion, he will banish ungodliness from Jacob";

1Tim 4:8 godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.

1Tim 6:6 There is great gain in godliness with contentment;

2Pet 3:11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of persons ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness,

1Tim 2:8-10 I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; 2:9 also that women should adorn themselves modestly and sensibly in seemly apparel, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly attire 2:10 but by good deeds, as befits women who profess religion.

How can I be godly?

1Tim 6:11 But as for you, man of God, shun all this; aim at righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.

2Pet 1:5-7 For this very reason make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.

Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

We have been called by God to change the world - we make disciples, by grace through the Word, we bring the world to the cross of Christ. In Jesus blood sins are washed away, we have peace with God and life everlasting. And we find comfort in the resurrection of the dead, that they now rest from their labors, at peace with God, in the place prepared for them, by our lord Jesus Christ.

Godliness, profitable for the world to come, and also profitable for us now. May we continue living lives of faith in Jesus name.
